Chopin and the Girl
When we think about paying tribute to such an endearing composer as Chopin, one immediately conjures century old classical compositions. What we forget is that in Chopin’s day, his music was basically the top of the pops. Fast forward to present day and Chopin is re-imagined and rearranged by the singer/songwriter Sojung Lee. In time for the 200th anniversary this year of Frederic Chopin’s Birth, Sojung breaks new ground with influences from every genre of music, and has combined the captivating melodies of Chopin’s Piano Music with her artistic creativity.
Enamored with Chopin’s music since a little girl practicing his etudes, Sojung has interpreted many of Chopin’s best known works into fresh contemporary songs. We’ve all lived with Chopin’s music but it is fascinating to discover anew the original compositions underscoring Sojung’s flawless vocals and imaginative interpretations. [Chopin and the Girl] was conceived as an evening of songs that would transport you to a special place where the air is rich with romance and love awaits around every corner.
With the lyrics that fit perfectly into the melodies, the album opens with one of the most famous pieces of Chopin’s music, Fantaisie Impromptu and ends with Sojung’s personal favorite pieces of Chopin. Among all, one that is most remarkable is “Cho-hon.” Written by the legendary Korean Poet, Kim So Wol, “Cho-Hon” which means evocation, is put together with Chopin’s Funeral March. The words of “Cho-hon” fits perfectly into Funeral March as if they were one in the beginning. Other history-breaking number is “Wave of life.” With Sojung’s bold attempt to lay lyrics without any changes to the original piece, “Wave of life” is recorded and tributed to Chopin.
The year 2010 marks the 200th anniversary since Chopin’s Birth in 1810. [Chopin and the Girl] is a diverse and colorful collection of Vocal interpretation of Frederic Chopin’s Music but in Sojung’s own words, it is simply “Her Chopin.”
